ABERDEEN RECEIVES $402,000 GRANT FROM STATE FOR REDEVELOPMENT SITE
ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP (2/10/09)—Aberdeen Township today announced that it has received $402,259 from the Municipal Grant Program of the Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund (HDSRF), a program administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA).
The grant money is designated for use in a remedial environmental investigation of the former South River Metal Products site on Church Street. As previously reported, the Township has designated PRC Group of West Long Branch to redevelop this site and an adjoining property into a residential community for seniors and active adults. Preliminary plans for the 15-acre tract call for approximately 90 affordable rental apartments and 60 condominiums in several multi-story buildings, along with a swimming pool and clubhouse for the complex’s residents.
Additionally, the developer has agreed to pay the entire cost for the construction of a community center on the site that would be open to all seniors in Aberdeen. “This second senior center located within the confines of the Township will certainly enhance the already popular and broad senior program offerings,” said Mayor David Sobel.
South River Metal Products abandoned the site in the 1990’s with the Township subsequently assuming ownership. Following that, the buildings were demolished in 2006. The environmental investigation covered by the grant funds is designed to collect all information needed to prepare a plan to clean up contaminants that were released on the site during the company’s years of operations there. To date, the soil, groundwater, sediment and surface water sampling and laboratory analysis for the investigation have been completed. A final report is currently being prepared for submission to the NJDEP this March.
Following state approval of the remedial investigation, a work plan to clean up the contamination will be prepared. Once the cleanup is completed, the site will be turned over to PRC for construction of the new community.
