GRASS CLIPPINGS ARE NOT PICKED UP BY THE TOWNSHIP

Residents have the option of either cutting and leaving their grass on the lawn or taking the clippings to the Grass Drop Off Center at the Monmouth County Reclamation Center located on Asbury Avenue (west of Shafto Road) in Tinton Falls. Call 918-0142 for drop off times. There is a fee for this service.

LEAVE GRASS CLIPPINGS ON THE LAWN
It has always been "common knowledge" that grass clippings would "hurt" the grass if not picked up. Later on this "common knowledge" said that grass clippings not picked up would cause thatch. However, modern research by developers of fine lawn products has shown that since grass is an organic material, it actually becomes a natural fertilizer for a growing lawn as it decomposes, generally in about 7 to 10 days. Lawn experts also agree that lawn clippings do NOT create THATCH; rather, thatch is formed from the accumulation of dead roots and stems.

In addition to removing grass clippings from the waste stream, GRASS-CYCLING (leaving clippings on the law):

  1. Reduces mowing time by 20 - 25%
  2. Saves the expense of buying plastic bags to put the clippings in
  3. Reduces the amount of fertilizer needed
  4. Automatically improves the health of your lawn

The recent refinement of the MULCHING MOWER, which chops the grass cuttings into fine pieces, makes this a very effective action which aids in rapid decomposition.

COMPOSTING

Any person who gardens "organically" is intimately familiar with composting. The definition of composting is "the technique of recycling garden waste back into the soil". Through the action of naturally occurring bacteria in organic material, this procedure produces enzymes that feed on carbon base compounds by oxidizing them into the final product known as humus. The biological combustion reduces both the mass and the volume of the material without any air pollution.

How practical is it? For one, this process is applied to the leaves that are collected in Aberdeen and turns them into the compost which is available to residents. The compost materials are free and are available at the DPW garage every Spring and keeps them out of the waste stream. Another positive issue is the fact that composting is capable of making use of up to half of the kitchen garbage wastes, yard trimmings and some waste paper that most Americans throw out.

YOU TOO CAN COMPOST YOUR HOUSEHOLD WASTE. THINK ENVIRONMENT.
